When Brant Pinvidic and his creative team were dreaming up the idea for a new TV series, they were getting bogged down on how to pitch it. All their attempts at explaining the show just kept getting more and more complicated, and convoluted. So Brant Pinvidic did something unusual – he got John Slade, the head of programming at ABC, on the phone and said: "John, I have something spectacular. I've been working on it for months and I just cracked it. I have to pitch it to you today, right now. It will just take five minutes. We follow them for one entire year while they lose weight – tens or even hundreds of pounds.

We edit that year of weight loss into one single episode per person. They start out fat and by the end of one hour they are thin.

We film them all at the same time, but each person gets their own episode.

That was his entire pitch – it took less than three minutes. Brant also pointed out that even if ABC were to buy the show today, it wouldn't be ready to air for eighteen months, and that by that time John Slade might even have moved to another position. John Slade looked at him thoughtfully for a few seconds, and then asked a couple of questions about whether Brant's production company could actually pull it off. Pinvidic left and the next day, Slade called and asked whether the show could be made for less than $1 million an episode. Brant Pinvidic said it could be and later that afternoon, ABC sent over a contract to buy ten episodes. The show premiered in 2011 as Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition.
