Tesla had a problem at its vast 5-million-square-feet Fremont assembly plant. Elon Musk had mandated that for Tesla to win in global markets, the company would need to halve its manufacturing costs. Doug Field, Tesla's head of engineering, met with company president Jon McNeill to try and come up with ideas on how to do that. They first noted the body shop where three hundred parts were welded together to form the chassis of Tesla's cars took up half the factory space.
